The film is blurry. Lower comprehensive school went fine as I was a clever kid, although I did get into a lot of fights and was always a bit too energetic to stay still. When I was not focused on playing with computers or building legos, that is. I was very good and creative with them and still remember the very detailed versions of Millennium Falcon, U.S.S. Enterprise and X-Wing fighter that I made. And this was years before the official Star Wars legos came out.
Our family had an old Basic computer when I was still a toddler, and I remember playing some games with it while sitting on my moms lap. When I was maybe six or seven, we got a Commodore 64 and I remember having some games on it as well. However, the real gaming experiences started when we got an Amiga 600. There were other neighborhood kids with Amigas so we swapped a lot of games and played our hearts out. This was the time of Mechforce, Syndicate, Lemmings, Bubble Bobble, Turrican and Star Control.
I was still at the lower comprehensive school when PC's started to become more common and good games were coming out. I managed to get myself an old 25Mhz 486 PC and was blown away when I realized that it had Doom installed. In my excitement I accidentally deleted the autoexec and config files that are used to load drivers etc. when the machine is starting up. I was so afraid my parents would find out that I had broken the computer, that I went my way and figured out how to install MS-DOS, Windows 3.1 and hardware drivers from scratch. I did not only manage to get the machine working again, but created a menu system that allowed me to start the computer with different driver and configuration options loaded. This allowed me to get more free conventional memory when needed so I was able to run games that were memory-picky such as Master of Orion and UFO: Enemy Unknown. I was ten or eleven at the time and a sucker for strategy games.
During upper comprehensive me and my friends discovered not only girls and booze, but also LAN parties. This was the time of Action Quake, C&C Red Alert and Diablo. It was also around this time that I built my first PC using separately purchased components. Now, it might seem that I did nothing else during my childhood years than played computer games, and having always good grades at school I guess I was labeled as a bit of a nerd. However, I was always rather outgoing and enjoyed playing soccer, skiing, snowboarding and hanging out with friends. I also learned the piano and was in couple small bands playing Finnish rock classics. In general though, I hated the atmosphere at upper comprehensive and was eager to leave that environment behind.
One of the best choices I ever made was to apply to a high school that was further away from home, but focused on teaching performing arts and self expression. I knew no one at the school, but it attracts people from all over Finland so I was not the only one. I think this is one of the reasons why it's very easy to make friends there. People are also much more open, positive and social than in the horrid upper comprehensive. During high school years I got even more into sports and started running actively during summers and went snowboarding pretty much every week during winters.
